Red Admiral

I’ve had this picture of a butterfly for a while now, it is the first one that I saw in 2013.  But I’ve been holding on to it until “Summer” starts.  It’s been a while…

But finally we’ve had a couple of weeks of nice, sunny weather and a fair few butterflies.  The paths on Skomer can fill with Small Coppers in the sunshine and the first Small Tortoiseshell was seen today.  Add to that the thousands of Puffins bringing in sandeels for their chicks and it really does feel like summer.  Luckily my job involves spending hours on the cliff tops amongst the Puffins and Gulls, monitoring the Guillemots and Razorbills on the opposing cliffs.  This week the winds and rains have returned but its still quite enjoyable sitting there, wrapped up against the weather, accompanied by a few dozen Puffins, puffing themselves up to ward of the cold.
