rabbitRabbits can be a bit like Puffins on Skomer- there are loads of them all over the place and some are even black and white!  You also tend to get a lot of questions about them from the day visitors…

But they are good companions on the island, they don’t fear people as much as mainland rabbits so there will always be a few nearby as you walk down the paths- scampering away down a burrow at the last minute.  This fellow shows the white saddle pattern that occurs in the Skomer population, introduced by domestic stock that were meant to raise the value of the skins which used to be harvested and sold on the mainland.  We also get black ones and even long haired chinchilla coated rabbits, but by and large the rabbits are usually rabbit-coloured.  And when the bracken grows up you see a lot less of them too, but they are definitely still there in massive numbers.
