Spawn

toadsThe toads of Skomer have started to think its spring, even if the birds are still unsure about it.  several pairs can be seen in the ponds and streams, with the male clamped on the top of the large, gravid female.  They seem to manage about their daily business just fine, and the male will not let go until spawning is complete- or else a rival male will claim his mate and he won’t pass on his genes to the next generation this time round.  This can become a bit of a problem as females try to go through gaps they normally pass through, but get stuck due to their unwieldy passengers.  Rabbit exclosures are the main problem as the mesh is just too small for the paired up toads.  These ones had managed to avoid such problems however and had reached open water, and will probably lay in the next few days.
