Oyster Catcher

Oyster Catchers are everywhere on Skomer.  First few chicks have hatched and the rest are busy with their eggs.  This means that wherever you are on the island you are pretty much guaranteed to be near a parent bird, and they will let you know.  The adults will either run off and try to distract you from the nest, or else get up and circle you in flight whilst calling loudly- often they work as a team and one parent will do each!  This is the nice treatment as most birds, including gulls and buzzards, get mobbed and harried until they move along.

So generally an annoying bird if you’re out for a stroll but undeniably characterful and smart looking!
