Puffin

I started my recent post about Sand Martin by saying I though I might run out of birds…

I am an idiot.

I forgot bout Puffins…

So here are some Puffin shots:

Puffins are amazingly “bold” birds, they lack any fear of land based animals due to their habit of breeding on isolated islands where there are no rats or stoats or foxes or snakes.  This means their only real predators are gulls, of the black backed variety mostly, and they therefore let people wander quite close and take pictures before they decide to scuttle into their burrows.

Just because they aren’t predated doesn’t stop them being inquisitive about visitors to their islands though.  As you walk along paths in the afternoon and evening a hundred or so beady eyes will follow your progress, noting your progress and watching out for airborne danger.
